Just purchased a new JD790, 4wd, and now have 10 hrs on tractor. So far love the machine. Only problem is when I engage rear PTO (clutch depressed as far as it will go) more often than not I get metal on metal grinding. I have tried to engage at low RPMs, high RPMs, and everything in between and still get the grinding. My old Ford 8N has never done this. Dealer says not a problem as long as implement is not immediately engaged. A friend with a 10- year old JD 850 says his has done the same thing since day one, but still makes me nervous to hear gears grinding with clutch fully depressed. Just wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences?

Have you tried waiting a few seconds (maybe 5-10 seconds) after pushing in the clutch before trying to engage the PTO? Maybe the friction plate has not coasted to a complete stop before you're trying to engage the PTO. ....

Thanks, that seems to be working. I still get some resistance, kind of like easing an old car into an unsyncronized first gear; but on the whole much better. ....

Jeff, it sounds like it is doing what many others do. The portion of the clutch that drives the PTO is not as nifty as the transmission clutch. The PTO clutch plates drag and the gears take a looooong time to spin down. IMHO it is sloppy engineering, but I have never heard of the grinding being a problem. Every tractor I've ever had has done the same. In larger tractors where you may have significant load on the PTO shaft it is common practice to shut off the engine, engage PTO gears, start engine, and finally de-clutch the PTO.....all to get the shaft to turn under power! ....
